1 Arrive Arusha, Tanzania

Perched 4,600 feet above sea level, the city of Arusha offers a laid-back atmosphere enriched by Maasai heritage. Just beyond, lush volcanic hills and rolling valleys adorned with tea and coffee plantations stretch towards Mount Meru, with the distant silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro completing the dramatic backdrop.

Embark on an acclimatizing walk in Arusha National Park, home to Africa’s second highest peak and a large population of giraffes.

Leave the acacia trees of the Equator behind and venture skywards to Machame village, where your trek begins. Walk through a forest of fig and rubber trees, begonias and other tropical vegetation as you ascend to your first campsite.

Awake early to trek up a steep track through tall grasses, volcanic rock and bearded heather. Encounter giant groundsels through the ghostly landscape of volcanic lava, caves and foaming streams.

A steady walk takes you up to the pass at Lava Tower, across the Bastain stream and down toward Barranco Camp. Here, numerous waterfalls converge to form the Umbwe River.

Ascend the Barranco with some light rock climbing and continue over moraine ridges to camp. Later, hike the Karanga Valley, where giant senecio and lobelia grow.

Make the scenic climb up a moraine and lava ridge, taking in striking views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks along the way.

Wake just after midnight to begin your push to the crater edge and the summit. Then, descend to rest at Kibo Hut, arriving at Mweka Camp late this afternoon to celebrate your achievement.

This morning you descend to the base, arriving at the gate around midday.
